Take a look at 2 more studies. One study measured weight change when adults taking Wegovy® either stayed on Wegovy® or switched to placebo.§ Another study followed weight maintenance in adults taking Wegovy® over the course of 2 years.‖
In a medical study that lasted about 1 year and 4 months (68 weeks), everyone took Wegovy® for the first 5 months (20 weeks) while also reducing calories and increasing physical activity.
At month 5 (week 20), adults were divided into 2 groups: One group continued taking Wegovy®, while the other group switched to placebo.
From month 5 through the end of the study, adults who stayed on Wegovy® continued to lose weight, while the adults taking placebo gained weight.
§This medical study included 902 adults with either obesity (BMI ≥ 30) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27) with at least 1 weight-related condition. Adults with type 2 diabetes were excluded. In the first 20 weeks, everyone started taking Wegovy®. Of these 902 adults, 803 were able to reach the 2.4-mg dose and were randomized to stay on Wegovy® (535 adults) or switch to placebo (268 adults). After week 20, 5.8% of participants taking Wegovy® discontinued treatment compared with the 11.6% taking placebo. Adults who continued taking Wegovy® lost an additional 7.9% of their body weight on average while those who switched to placebo gained 6.9% body weight on average. Everyone was instructed to follow a reduced calorie diet and increase their physical activity throughout the length of the study.
‖This 2-year medical study included 304 adults with either obesity (BMI ≥ 30) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27) with at least 1 weight-related medical condition. Adults with diabetes were excluded. Everyone received instruction for a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. During the trial, 13% of participants taking Wegovy® discontinued treatment compared with 27% taking placebo.
